Beauty guru: Michelle Doherty of Alpha-H
Michelle Doherty is a bit of a legend in skincare circles. For nearly 22 years she has been the leading light at Alpha-H, the Aussie brand of ‘concentrated skincare’ beloved by its fans and by beauty editors worldwide for the way it gives real skin-changing results.
I caught up with her on one of her flying visits to London last week where she was launching new products, and asked for her top three recommendations for any of us who want better skin.
‘It’s the most cost-effective anti-ageing tool on the market today,’ says Michelle. ‘There’s a study by Queensland University which shows that if you wear sunscreen every day, there will be no detectable ageing changes in your skin for four and a half years.’ And that’s without using any other skincare products.
Use glycolic acid
Glycolic acid is brilliant for refreshing, exfoliating and hydrating the skin. It dissolves the bonds that tether old dead skin cells to the skin’s surface, so it gives a light, non-abrasive chemical exfoliation -- and Alpha-H’s Liquid Gold resurfacing treatment is the brands best-known and best-loved product.
‘It really does create better hydration from within the skin as well as exfoliating,’ says Michelle. (Like many other beauty eds, I adore this always have it on the bathroom shelf - a quick once-over with this after cleansing in the evening is the quickest way to brighter skin by the morning.)
Use effective vitamin-based serums…
Why use vitamins on the skin? ‘Because it’s what you do with your skin after you’ve exfoliated it that makes the world of difference,’ says Michelle.
You don’t have to use their vitamins, but while we’re on the subject, this is the place to mention that Alpha-H has come up with the concept of ‘Vitamin Profiling’, with a set of four serums based on single vitamins (A = Anti-Ageing, B= Building moisture in stressed skin, C= enhancing Clarity, and E for Emergency repair) which are an absolute bargain at £49.99. I thought each of these would be priced around £45, and Michelle did say that they are worth over £100.
How to choose which to use? There’s a vitamin-profiling ‘wheel’ which will be available soon on the website which points up the best combinations for particular skin concerns. Handy.
And if you want to hear a brilliant in-depth interview with Michelle and her partner-in-glycolics-and-vitamins Tom Ogden, where they are talking about Alpha-H, life choices, life’s chances and life-changing skincare, I’d highly recommend this which is the duo talking about all this and more on the Emma Guns Show - it’s number 34 on the list on the link.
