Beauty, past and present: Nefertiti

Seeing this famous image of Queen Nefertiti in the paper today gave me pause for thought about the way beauty ideals change over the years -- or don't.

The standard wisdom is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and so of course different eras find different things beautiful - such as the Elizabethan trend for women to have high shaved foreheads, or the voluptuous lovelies depicted by Rubens in the early 17th century, neither of which looks finds much favour today.

But looking at Nefertiti’s face from 3,300 years ago, with those strong eyebrows, fine high cheekbones, outlined eyes, perfect lips and well-defined jawline - it's pretty well the template for modern beauty, isn't it? Perhaps what we find beautiful doesn’t vary so much, after all.
