Be Beautiful (Walker Books, £9.99)

Be Beautiful is about getting to grips with the basics of skincare and discovering the fun of make-up.
It’s also about learning to do all this in a way that isn’t going to cost the earth – and that’s age-appropriate and not too grown-up. As Molly, my co-author,  put it, ‘If you look good, you feel good.’ And isn’t that what we all want?

Molly is my eldest daughter and when she  was 12, she started asking masses of questions about how she should look after her face and hair, and whether she could use mascara and shave her legs (and if not, why not?)

Even though I had been writing about beauty and health for years, her questions made me stop and think. I was used to answering adults’ questions about skincare, but Molly’s were different. ‘Is cleansing the same thing as washing your face?’ Why is it different? What do you use?’ One question led to another: how to deal with spots, how to blow-dry hair so it is smooth and shiny, how to choose a perfume… and when we put them all together, this book began to emerge.
